Downtown planning
Lebanon Mayor Huck Lewis and a representative of the Indiana Main Street program discuss plans and potential for downtown Lebanon at a meeting of Lebanon Vitalization Inc. Tuesday evening. LVI is now considering a local historic preservation effort and finding funds for facade grants to help building owners interested in improving the appearance of their properties. Before a historic preservation commission can be created, the city would have to pass a ordinance. If created by ordinance, the commission that would oversee proposed projects in the designated area or areas with the goal of creating preservation guidelines and protecting the architectural and historical features of the downtown area. Mayor Lewis said the ordinance could be considered in the next three to six months. “In the meantime, I need feedback from everybody downtown.” LVI member Dan Robbins said he is excited about the potential. “People should put negativity aside and become a partner,” he said. “They mayor isn’t going to be able to do this by himself. A lot of people have to be on the same page.”
