Lebanon resident Kerri Richardson, a junior at Indiana University, Bloomington, was honored this week at the Monroe County Red Cross “Be a Hero for the American Red Cross” event.
Richardson, along with IU students Sam Neher and Kenny Lowe, was working at the Student Recreational Sport Center on the Bloomington campus on Jan. 11, the first day of classes for the spring semester, when another student collapsed on the indoor track. They administered CPR and used the RecSports AEDabadger 3/4/10 what’s AED?, until the EMS could arrive and transport the student to the Bloomington hospital.
The IU student they helped save has since had a pacemaker and defibrillator implanted, and after a few days at home returned to classes at Indiana University. Because of their lifesaving efforts, the students were presented the American Red Cross National Life Saving Award for the Professional Responder on March 3. The award was presented to them by IU Football Coach Bill Lynch during the event. The event was hosted by Coach Lynch at the Indiana Memorial Stadium-Hoosier Room.
Richardson is the daughter of Doug and Beth Richardson of rural Lebanon and a 2007 Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School graduate.
Employees at the RecSports facility, where Richardson is a team leader, are required to be certified in first aid, CPR and AEDs.
