Lebanon — Members of Lebanon’s Elks Lodge No. 635 have elected Ché McCoy as its first female president (official title is exalted ruler). McCoy has been an officer for the last five years, performing various duties that prepared her to be president. Her leadership abilities, along with a great team of officers, will facilitate another prosperous year of benevolent activities that will provide for Lebanon, Indiana and the surrounding communities.
One of the patriotic programs supported by the Elks is Flag Day, June 14. An Elks tradition, patriotism has characterized the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America since the early days of the organization. Allegiance to the flag of our country is a requirement of every member. In 1907, the BPO Elks Grand Lodge designated by resolution June 14 as Flag Day.
The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every lodge in 1911, and that requirement continues. The Elks prompted President Woodrow Wilson to recognize the Order’s observance of Flag Day for its patriotic expression. But it was not until 1949 when President Harry Truman, himself a member of the Elks, made the proclamation that thereafter June 14 would be a day of national observance for the symbol of our country.
The Elks have been in Lebanon for 109 years. Through the many charitable contributions of time and money by its members, the Lebanon Elks have helped youth, veterans, disadvantage and handicapped, and have supported many patriotic and civic programs.
If you have a family member or a friend who is an Elks member and are interested in learning more about the Elks, you may attend as their guest one of the Wednesday or Friday evening meals.
