Fayette — Mt. Tabor Regular Baptist Church is celebrating this month something Pastor Jason Grubbs calls “unbelievable” — its 175th anniversary.
“I’d never heard of a church doing that until I got here,” said Grubbs, explaining that it’s rare for churches to last that long.
In fact, two other Lebanon churches recently observed their 175th anniversaries June 26 at the Joe Haboush Memorial Bandstand in Lebanon’s Memorial Park. Central Christian Church and Centenary United Methodist Church were also founded in 1835.
Grubbs, who is from Tennessee but has been the pastor here for three months, attributes the longevity of the church to the “strong nucleus” of people. Sunday attendance is roughly 175 people, he said, and they show real commitment.
“They’ve stayed here through thick and thin,” Grubbs said. “Today, most people leave churches over little things. These people stayed through big things. That’s real stability that’s missing in a lot of churches.”
Many people in the congregation are related, he said, because it’s such a family church. The older people who come also attend with their children and grandchildren, many of whom choose to stick around and live in the area.
“They’ve passed their heritage down,” Grubbs said.
