Marching to the beat of his own drum set

Lebanon — Lebanon High School senior Tyler Shields has been drawing attention lately from local high school, college and even professional music circles.

Shields, a percussionist at LHS (in jazz band, marching band, pep band, wind ensemble and percussion ensemble), was selected to perform with the all-state jazz band as the No. 1 drummer, all-state honors band and all-state orchestra. Because of schedule conflicts, Shields said he could only choose one — all-state jazz, he said, because “my ultimate goal is to be a drum set performance major” in college.

And one college is already seeking out Shields’ talent. The University of Indianapolis invited Shields to perform in the percussion ensemble, and he did on Nov. 30. The university then invited him to perform with them the rest of the season, even though he is still a high school student.

He has also been selected to perform in April with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in their side-by-side performance. Shields is part of the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra.
