Golf cart permit deadline

Golf carts may, technically, be off-road vehicles, but not all off-road vehicles are all-terrain vehicles.

And no ATVs will be issued golf cart permits, Clerk/Treasurer Debbie Ottinger said Wednesday.

Golf cart owners have until 4 p.m. today to buy a $30 permit allowing them to operate carts on certain public streets. Proof of insurance and a current driver’s license must be presented at the clerk-treasurer’s office on the first floor of the Lebanon Municipal Building, 401 S. Meridian St., Ottinger said.

Some ATV owners have asked for permits, but the city can’t legally issue them, Ottinger said.

“Other than golf carts, we are not allowed to issue permits for off-road vehicles,” Ottinger said.

During the holiday, Lebanon police will concentrate on public safety issues, LPD Lt. Brent Wheat said.

“If folks are in violation of the (golf cart) ordinance, they will receive a ticket,” Wheat said. Golf cart issues will be handled on a case-by-case basis — unless there’s a danger to the public.

“Drinking and driving, underage drivers, that will draw a response from law enforcement,” Wheat said.

“Our primary concern, as with motor vehicles, is public safety, more than anything,” he said.
