Fire destroys Thorntown Home

Thorntown — A fire investigator has been called in to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a home at 216 E. Church St. in Thorntown Monday. Thorntown Assistant Fire Chief Steven Whittinghill said firefighters arrived at the scene after receiving the call at 6:51 a.m. to find heavy flames and smoke coming from the back of the house. He said the blaze was brought under control in 15 minutes, but crews, shown above, continued to search through the rafters Monday morning to extinguish the fire. Whittinghill said the house sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage, and he estimated it would be a total loss. Kyle Coffman, who lives across the street, said he was asleep on his couch when he woke up to the smell of smoke. “It was all black,” Coffman said. Matt Singleton rented the house, but was out of town at the time of the fire. Some animals, including ferrets and turtles, in the garage were unharmed. Thorntown, Sugar Creek Township and Center Township all responded to the scene.
