Local celebrities race for Kiwanis Saturday

Lebanon — Ten celebrity racers were signed up to race in the Lebanon Kiwanis Grand Prix as of Wednesday, but Donna Boyland of the Kiwanis is expecting several more to sign up before Saturday’s big race.

They usually have around 27 racers, she said.

“We get a lot of people coming in at the last minute,” Boyland said.

The celebrity race will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Lebanon High School. Those signed up to race so far include Sheriff Ken Campbell, Don Dodson, Jason Lee, Jeff Whitaker, Jeremy Lamar, Laurie Goss, Scott Mauch, and a representative from Indiana Teen Challenge and one from Witham Health Services. Mel Kenyan, local midget racer and an Indianapolis 500 racer, will also participate in the celebrity race.

“It is hysterical,” Boyland said of the celebrity race. “If you don’t come to see anything else, you have to see the celebrity race. They’re talking smack and picking on each other.”

The celebrity race will be followed by practice time for the Indy Karting Series until 5 p.m. The Indy Karting Series race will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the LHS parking lot.

This is Kiwanis’ 19th year of hosting this event.

“It’s free, so bring your family and friends and come out and have a good time,” Boyland said. “We have a good turnout, and it is so much fun.”

Through money raised from trophy sponsors, driver entry fees and selling of program advertisements, Kiwanis helps to fund several local children’s programs. This grand prix and the pancake supper are the two big Kiwanis fundraisers each year.

The programs the grand prix helps support include BackPack Attack, the fishing derby, the high schools’ top 20 luncheons, the Action Club, the Builders Club, Key Club, K Kids, Read Around the World, Young Children Priority One program, and they have also helped the Lebanon High School football team go to Haiti, buy tennis shoes for gym classes at Hattie B. Stokes Elementary, and sponsor the Kiwanis leadership program, Boyland said.

“If children need the money, we try to make sure they have it,” she said. “The money we make from this goes to the kids of Boone County.”
