Lebanon — “My name is Raja. I am from Prague. I am a Jew. I survived Terezin.”

Talor Poor, Lebanon High School junior, starts off LHS’ spring play with these words, which set the scene for “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.” This play follows memories of Raja — one of the only to survive — through her time at the Terezin concentration camp during the Holocaust.

The play is based on a book of the same name, explained LHS English and theater teacher and play director Rachel Becker. The book is a collection of memories — drawings, paintings, poems, diary entries — from children that were kept at Terezin in the 1940s. These recorded memories were buried, and years later, discovered.

“I like to do shows that reveal the human condition, to give the audience something to relate to,” Becker said. “This really spoke to me, and (the students’) reactions to it were infectious. They wanted to know more.”
