Dover — The need for a new tax levy to compensate for state funding cuts was discussed by the Western Boone Community School Board Monday.
On May 4, voters in the district will vote yes or no on the question:
“For the 2011 calendar year and six years thereafter, shall the Western Boone County Community School Corporation impose a property tax rate that does not exceed nineteen cents ($0.19) on each one hundred dollars of assessed valuation and that is in addition to the school corporation’s normal tuition support tax rate?”
Monday, WeBo Superintendent Dr. Judi Hendrix said the Indiana General Assembly’s removal of local property taxes was a factor in a $853,856 shortfall in the school district’s general fund.
Even if the referendum passes, WeBo will have to eliminate six teaching positions; 11 instructional assistants, paid elementary athletic coaches; and 38 paid club sponsors and summer camp positions.
