Sales pitches may lead to county HR department

Sales pitches from insurance companies may have pushed the Boone County Commissioners closer to establishing a human resources department.

At the Feb. 1 commissioners meeting, Paul Smerud of Liberty National Life Insurance became the latest in a series of salesmen who unsuccessfully asked to meet with county employees.

The commissioners replied to Smerud’s pitch with one of their own — high and inside.

County officials “aren’t particularly interested in being part of Liberty National’s sales force,” Commissioner Charles Eaton told Smerud.

“There are other issues,” Eaton said. “One is talking to employees on their time, not on county time.”

Two weeks ago, representatives of PrePaid Legal Inc. sought permission to offer their services to county workers. Commissioner Jeff Wolfe said he would check out the firm.
