Trees bring aroma of home to troops

Dover — A national project to deliver fresh Christmas trees to service members and their families around the world opened its eighth year at Dull’s Tree Farm, rural Thorntown, Tuesday.

Nearly 40 volunteers from the FedEx hub in Indianapolis came to Dull’s to prepare more than 300 trees for eventual delivery to U.S. bases in Afghanistan, said Paula Bosler, a FedEx spokeswoman.

Ornaments have been included with the trees for several years, and the selection has expanded, Bosler said. Children of FedEx employees have made ornaments at their schools for inclusion in the deliveries, she said.

Service members who receive trees most remember the smell of pine when the tree is unboxed, Bosler said. Opening the box  and smelling the pine immediately reminds them of the holiday.

Troops who received trees said when they inhaled “the smell of Christmas,” it brought back their childhood memories, she said.

While at church Sunday, Tom Dull was approached by a man who said that last year he was in Iraq, and was with a unit that received a tree. The man wanted to thank Dull, Bosler said.
