Lebanon — The United Way of Central Indiana in Boone County is raising the bar this year with several record highs.
They have the highest number of Pacesetter companies, 14; the most Day of Caring volunteers, 128; the most Day of Caring projects, 16; and the highest fundraising goal ever.
This year’s goal, announced Friday morning at the 2010 United Way campaign kick-off breakfast at Boone County Senior Services, is $210,000.
“The thermometers are up. Now we just have to get the red parts up — which we will,” said Nicole Noonchester, campaign chair. “It can be done. You guys are the only ones who can make this happen.”
Last year, the local United Way campaign raised $198,000, said Jill Troha, United Way area director, and more than $430,000 was allocated to United Way agencies in the county by the United Way of Central Indiana.
Volunteers Friday went out into the county to work on 16 projects during the 19th annual Day of Caring, a day when volunteers blitz the county with free labor. Projects ranged from painting and yard work to cleaning and book organizing — all to help out at local not-for-profits, churches, libraries and individual senior citizens’ homes.
“Giving, advocating, volunteering — you’re doing all three today,” Troha said to volunteers at the breakfast Friday. “We’re here to change lives, and that’s what you’ll be doing through these projects.”
