Thorntown — A Lafayette man was killed late Thursday morning when his car flipped on the 5000 block of U.S. 52 near Perdue Farms in Thorntown. Phillip R. Haper, 74, was headed south on U.S. 52 shortly after 11 a.m. when a driver behind him called Boone County dispatch to report that he was driving erratically and had gone off the side of the road several times. Authorities had just gotten to County Road 350 West where they were ready to safely intercept him when the crash occurred. “He didn’t make it to our spot,” said Boone County Sheriff’s Office Major Mike Nielsen. Haper flipped the car and was trapped under the vehicle. The car was a vintage 1965 Corvair Corsa convertible. Above, Boone County Sheriff’s Deputy A.J. Naekel marks the crash site. Nielsen said authorities found a backpack with medical supplies for diabetes in the car and believe a health condition may have contributed to the crash.
