Community campaigns for Meijer

Anson —

Super retailer Meijer may have delayed its plan to build a superstore in Boone County, a project first announced in fall 2007.

But the Boone County Economic Development Corp. and community members in Whitestown and Zionsville want the prospective anchor of the Anson Project to know it hasn’t been forgotten.

In an effort to showcase area support for the project, the Boone EDC started a “Support Meijer in Anson” Facebook page, an online forum where Facebook members can pledge their allegiance to a new Meijer store.

Since the page was first created on May 10, hundreds of pro-Meijer Facebookers have posted messages, and more than 1,100 people have “liked” the page.

“Please build a Meijer in the Anson area!” a message written under the name of Yvonne Rodriguez said. “Gas is getting too expensive for me to drive to Carmel.”

Another post under the name of Becky Emerick said, “I think if a Meijer is built, I will just sell my car and buy a golf cart! I would practically live there!”

Dax Norton, the executive director of the Boone EDC, said the idea to create a Facebook page came after meeting with Meijer representatives who were visiting the southwestern Boone County property in late April.
