Boone County — A contract with a company that dug through the county’s telephone bills to collect excess charges will be canceled, while another firm, that says it can cut the county’s natural gas bills, will be given a chance to back up their claim.
Recovery Discovery had been hired by the Boone County Commissioners in May 2010 to look through phone bills, find hidden fees, and return that money to the county in exchange for a percentage of the amount found.
Recovery Discovery “did help clean up some of the issues that went back into the 1990s,” Eric Goodnight, president of Government Utilities Technology Services, told the commissioners. GUTS provides computer hardware and software support for the county.
After paying the company’s fee, however, the county hasn’t made a profit, Goodnight said, and GUTS can take over the work. “We believe we’re in a position to manage this going forward,” Goodnight said.
