Fifteen vie for Miss Boone title

Boone County 4-H pre-fair activities will kick off this weekend with the 2008 Boone County 4-H Queen Pageant.

The pageant will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Pavilion at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds. The 15 contestants are between 16 and 21 years of age; they are, or have been, members of Boone County 4-H, and they are members of other county agencies or organizations. They will be judged in three categories: personal interview, professional wear and formal wear.

The candidate named queen will be the official host of activities held during the Boone County fair week, and will compete in the Miss Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant Aug. 15-17.

The Boone County 4-H Fair Queen Pageant will be carried live on local radio station, RadioMom 91.1FM. The queen pageant will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. RadioMom’s coverage will begin at 7:15 p.m. Former Miss Boone County Nikki Soloman and RadioMom’s Scott Carney will co-anchor the live coverage.

The contestants are:



Maria Badillo

Maria Badillo, 18, of Lebanon, graduated from Lebanon High School in 2007. She attends IUPUI, studying education.

She currently works for the Boone County YMCA.

Her honors and activities include Bonner-Wright Scholar at DePauw University; 320 hours of community service this school year; swim team, seven years; softball, nine years; cheerleader for DePauw University; show choir, three years; Madrigal Choir, two years; Key Club, four years (two years on state board); National Honor Society, two years; FFA, three years; Fellowship of Christian Athletes, three years; Kiwanis scholarship; Sport Leadership Award scholarship.

Badillo’s hobbies and interests include watching movies, riding bikes, fishing, singing and dancing, swimming and diving, sheering on the Colts, hanging out with my wonderful family, coaching middle and high school diving, traveling and trying new foods.

She is a member of the Center Township Tiger Champions 4-H club, led by Marie Lininger.

4-H projects are shooting sports, two years; photography, one year; junior leaders, two years; club president for Center Blue Ribbon, one year.

Her sponsor is the Boone County Extension Homemakers Merri Mixers.

Her parents are John and Erika Kouns and Frank and Ranissa Badillo. Her siblings are Brady, 16, Shyanne, 10, Tom, 9, and Rani, 6.



Ellen Carrell

Ellen Carrell, 18, of Lebanon, graduated from Lebanon High School in 2008. She will attend Purdue University, where she plans to study food science.

She currently works as a server at Arni’s in Lebanon.

She was involved in FFA for several years, as treasurer from 2007 to 2008, sophomore representative from 2005 to 2006, and received a Paradise Tomato Kitchens scholarship. She was parliamentarian for the Z-Club from 2007 to 2008. She also has been active in the youth group at First Community Church in Lebanon.

Her hobbies and interests include spending time with friends and family, 4-H, listening to music and watching movies.

Carrell is a member of the Perry Township Future Farmers 4-H club, led by Doug Everett.

4-H projects are dairy, nine years; sewing/fashion revue, nine years; microwave cooking, eight years; junior leaders, five years; miscellaneous crafts, four years; latch hook, two years; gift wrapping, five years; cats, one year; junior leaders vice president, three years; state 4-H junior leader conference council, one year; Indiana State Fair youth leadership conference group advisor, one year; National 4-H dairy conference, one year; 4-H camp counselor, six years; 4-H science workshops, four years; Danforth “I Dare You” award; outstanding dairy member award; and outstanding senior sewing award.

Her parents are Tony and Barb Carrell, and she has a brother Jeff, 20, and a sister Julie, 15.



Whitney Galvin

Whitney Galvin, 20, of Lebanon, graduated from Western Boone High School in 2006. She attends Ball State University and plans to graduate in 2010.

She works as a tutor at The Writing Center at Ball State University, a substitute teacher through Western Boone School Corporation and a server at Pizza Hut.

Her activities and honors in high school included National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, Key Club and Star Voices. At Ball State, her activities and honors include the Free the Slaves Organization, volunteer at Motivate our Minds, Student Volunteer Services’ volunteer of the month, Excellence in Academic Writing and Presentation award and the Carol Chalk scholarship. She attends Gadson Church of Christ and was a member of the Thorntown Youth Group.

Galvin’s hobbies and interests include singing, writing, running, photography, art, working with kids and spending time with friends and family.

She was a 10-year member of the Harrison Township Hustlers 4-H club, led by Beth Ellen George.

4-H projects were goats, 10 years; poultry, three years; miscellaneous crafts, eight years; ceramics, three years; junior leaders, six years; photography, four years; fine arts, three years; consumer clothing, one year; cross stitch, one year; flowers, one year; 2006 president of Harrison Hustlers; 2001 roundup; 2002 Chicago trip.

Galvin is sponsored by the Harrison Hustlers.

Her parents are Gary and Lisa Galvin, and she has two brothers, Aaron, 25, and Brian, 23.



Claire Garrity

Claire Garrity, 19, of Jamestown, graduated from Western Boone High School in 2007. She attends the University of Southern Indiana.

She currently is working at Pizza Hut, Kimben Farms, Vector and the USI Rice Library.

Her activities and honors include tennis, four years; National Honor Society, two years; Foreign Interest Club, three years; writer for Lebanon Reporter and school newspaper, two years; Jamestown United Methodist Church; flower planting at Advance Christian Church; toy drives; and cookie baking for nursing home.

Garrity’s hobbies and interests include playing tennis, participating in college intramural sports, cooking, latch hooking, cross stitching and working with her animals.

She was a member of the Jackson Township Victorettes 4-H club, led by Vicki Emmert.

4-H projects were cats, 10 years, State Fair reserve grand champion; foods, 10 years, two grand champions; miscellaneous crafts, 10 years, one grand champion; rabbits, 10 years, two grand champions; swine, 10 years, one reserve champion; aerospace, seven years, won State Fair, attended Nationals; cross stitch, five years, three grand champions and sweepstakes at State Fair; small engines, six years, one grand champion; latch hook, six years, three grand champions; gift wrapping, six years, two champions; needlepoint, five years, one grand champion; bicycles, six years, two reserve champions; Jackson Township president, four years; Lynn Miller Award; 4-H Tenure Award; Boone County 4-H Family Consumer Sciences/Agriculture Award; Achievement Awards in cats, aerospace, foods, cross stitch, latch hook, rabbits and miscellaneous crafts.

Amanda Haney

Amanda Haney, 19, of Lebanon, graduated from Lebanon High School in 2007. She attends Purdue University, studying elementary education.

She works at the Brick Street Inn in Zionsville. She also performs as a clown at parties and other events.

Her activities and honors in high school included memberships in National Honor Society, for which she was president; Z-Club, Key Club, Relay for Life Committee and she received the Jean Green Hardin Scholarship award and an American Legion Scholarship award. In college, her activities include Purduettes, Stewart Cooperative canned food drive, volunteer work at an animal shelter and nursing home and Samaritan’s Purse. At church, Haney’s activities include sunday school teaching, babysitting, vacation Bible school, church plays, and she was a camp counselor.

Haney’s hobbies and interests include singing, performing, beading, tennis and spending time with friends and family.

She is a member of the Center Township Clovers 4-H club, led by Lowell and Susan Endicott.

4-H projects are scrapbooking, one year; foods, one year; microwave cooking, one year; electric, one year; ceramics, two years; cross stitch, two years; consumer clothing, eight years; fashion revue, eight years; clowning, 10 years; outstanding clowning member, 2000 and 2007; outstanding consumer clothing member, 2000 and 2007; talent contest division winner, 2006; and talent contest division runner-up, 2007.

Her parents are Dave and Carol Haney, and she has a sister, Kala, 22.



Erin Hedrick

Erin Hedrick, 17, of Jamestown, attends Western Boone High School and will graduate in 2009. She plans to attend college to study business.

She currently works at Penn Station restaurant.

Her activities and honors include membership at Pleasant View Church, National Honor Society, Sunshine Society president and vice president, class officer, volleyball, Hoosier Girls State alternate, Guidance Office assistant, JDRF, Pep Club, prom committee and school leadership conference attendee.

Hedrick enjoys hanging out with friends, boating with family, watching movies and playing sports.

She belongs to the Harrison Township Hustlers 4-H club, led by Beth Ellen George.

4-H projects include dairy goats, eight years; swine, one year; photography, two years; ceramics, three years; miscellaneous crafts, two years; poultry, three years; drawing, two years; club secretary; current club president; help with dairy goat meetings.

Beta Sigma Phi is sponsoring Hedrick.

Her parents are Doug and Carla Hedrick, and she has a sister, Brianne, 21.



Rachel Hieston

Rachel Hieston, 19, of Jamestown, graduated from Western Boone High School in 2007. She is a sophomore at Joliet Junior College and plans to transfer to the University of Illinois in the fall of 2009.

She works at the Holiday Inn Express in Brownsburg.

Her activities and honors include national champion swine judge;2008 NACTA Conference; Joliet Junior College Livestock Judging Team, 3rd place Beef Team, Illinois State PAS Contest; member, president and treasurer of Western Boone High School FFA; competed at Keystone Livestock Contest, Harrisburg, Pa.; National Honor Society; Key Club and FIC; Top 20, 2007 Western Boone High School senior class.

Hieston’s hobbies and interests are showing cattle, judging livestock, listening to music, spending time with friends and family and cooking.

She was a member of the Jackson Township Victorettes 4-H club, led by Vicki Emmert, Delana Bennington and Angie Dickerson.

4-H projects and achievements were swine, 10 years; foods, 10 years; cattle eight years; cats, eight years; gift wrapping, seven years; cake decorating, three years; model building, one year; club president and vice president, two years; club recreation leader; cicago achievement trip; recipient of Hedge Memorial Award.

Her parents are Bob and Cindy Hieston, and she has two brothers, Nick, 20, and Jason, 16.



Erin King

Erin King, 19, of Kirklin, graduated from Clinton Central High School in 2008. She will study nursing at Ball State University.

She currently works at the Frankfort Animal Hospital.

Her activities and honors include president of the Kirklin Youth Council, member and AWANA’s Cubby Teacher at Faith Family Ministries, vice president of FFA, member of high school student council, National Honor Society, Foreign Language Club, FCCLA, participated in nursing home visits with dog, participated in homeless shelter mission trip to Indianapolis, participated in mission trip to Atlanta, Ga., with church youth group, won Milner Healthcare Nursing Scholarship and volunteered at Riley Children’s Hospital.

King enjoys training and showing her three Labrador Retrievers, water skiing, camping, hiking, teaching 4- and 5-year-old Cubbies class at church and spending time with family.

She is a member of the Washington Township Livewires 4-H club, led by Angela Moody.

4-H projects include dog obedience, eight years, in which she was Master Showman winner for four years, highest combined score winner for four years, State Fair agility winner for one year and a member of the junior dog project committee for three years; veterinary science, five years, in which she was 2007 grand champion and 2006 reserve grand champion; horse and pony, nine years; and junior leaders, one year.

Frankfort Animal Hospital is sponsoring King.

Her parents are Jeffery and Mary King, and she has a sister, Erica, 23.



Laura Lawson

Laura Lawson, 20, of Thorntown, graduated from Western Boone High School in 2007. She attends Butler University and is studying elementary education.

She teaches swimming lessons at Lawson’s and works for Zionsville School Corporation.

Her activities and honors include volleyball, basketball, tennis, National Honor Society, Key Club, Boys and Girls Club tutor, YMCA volunteer, Valparaiso University women’s tennis team, Webo Student Athlete Leadership, classroom volunteer for Western Boone and Brownsburg School Corporations and Zionsville freshman volleyball coach.

Lawson’s hobbies and interests are tennis, playing and teaching volleyball, basketball, swimming and tennis lessons, spending time with friends and family, watching television and movies, vacationing, scuba diving, exercising and volunteering.

She was a member of the Washington Livewires 4-H club, lead by Angie Moody.

4-H projects were swine, 10 years; beef, three years;, cake decorating, 10 years; scrap booking, one year; hay, eight years; and champion, reserve champion and blue honors in cake decorating.

Lawson is sponsored by Sugar Creek Club.

Her parents are Danny and Jane Lawson, and her siblings are Katy Wetter, 28, Emily Steffen, 26, and Ben Lawson, 21.



Meredith Naber

Meredith Naber, 18, of Sheridan, graduated from Zionsville High School in 2008. She plans to go to Purdue University for a doctorate in pharmacy.

Her current employment is babysitting.

Her activities and honors include Friends of the Courtyard, FCA, Jazz Band, German Club, National Honors Society, piano, Indianapolis Music Matinee member, Teen Bible Study, TRUTH, National Catholic Youth Conference and Eucharistic Minister.

Naber enjoys showing her horse, playing for piano contests and recitals, hanging with friends, spending time with family and hanging out with her boyfriend.

She is a member of the Union Township Merry Makers 4-H club, led by Susan Bigler and Kathy Sidden.

4-H projects include miscellaneous crafts, three years; cats, six years; dogs, six years; horse and pony, 9 years, 2005 and 2006 Indiana Horse of the Year nominee; club president.

The Union Merry Makers 4-H club is sponsoring Naber.

Her parents are Charlie and Karen Naber, and she has a brother, Derek, 21.



Lindsey Nevitt

Lindsey Nevitt, 18, of Zionsville, graduated from Indiana University High School in 2008. Her college plans include Online courses through IUPUI toward a degree in Business.

She works as an equestrian trainer at Kingsforth Hall Training Center.

Her activities and honors include high school softball, College Park Church youth group, swimming and diving team, selected for Children’s Ambassador Program (People to People), and equestrian competitor in hunter/jumper competitions and International Combined Driving.

Her hobbies and interests are swimming and diving, scuba diving, softball, volleyball, horseback riding, combined driving, reading, photography and sketching.

Nevitt is a member of the Union Township Merry Makers 4-H club, led by Kathy Siddens and Susan Bigler.

4-H projects are clothing, four years; foods, five years; horse and pony, 10 years; flowers, six years; computer, two years; latch hook, one year; food preparation, five years; microwave cooking, five years; dog obedience, five years; photography, four years; rabbits, three years; junior leaders, two years; held various offices in club.

Nevitt’s parents are Curt and Rita Nevitt, and she has three brothers, Doug, 33, Chad, 31, and Matt, 19.



Mischa Nixon

Mischa Nixon, 18, of Lebanon, graduated from Lebanon High School in 2008. She will attend Purdue University to study engineering.

She has worked at the Lebanon Public Library since 2005 and the Boone County YMCA from 2007 to 2008.

Her activities and honors include 2nd place in Rotary Club speech contest, Margaret F. Martin Memorial Award, Hoosier Scholar, Honda Teen Defensive Driving Course, ISSMA, National Honor Society, Madrigals, newspaper editor, Kenworthy Reading Camp volunteer, Academic Superbowl Science Team and she was ranked 3rd in her high school class.

Nixon enjoys reading, biking, spending time outdoors and drawing.

She is a member of the Center Township Clovers 4-H club, led by Susan and Lowell Endicott.

4-H projects include club treasurer; fine arts, four years; photography, five years; food prep, three years; dog obedience, three years; junior leaders, two years; veterinary science, three years; horsemen without horses, one year; scrapbooking, one year; gift wrapping, one year and latch hook, one year.

Her mother is Barbara Nixon, and she has a sister, Sascha, 10.



Carmen Sanders

Carmen Sanders, 18, of Zionsville, graduated from Zionsville High School in 2008. She plans to attend Indiana University.

She currently is employed at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant.

Her honors and activities include honor roll, honors diploma, helped run polls on election day, participated in Relay for Life and March of Dimes, speech club, Spanish club, art club, Friends of the Courtyard, soccer and five years of dance at Village Dance Studio.

Sanders’ hobbies and interests are spending time with friends, collecting new music and going to concerts, nature walks, painting, drawing, going new places, swimming, making jewelry and clay sculptures.

She is a member of the Union Township Merry Makers 4-H club, led by Kathy Siddens and Susan Bigler.

Rebecca Summers

Rebecca Summers, 18, of Ladoga, graduated from Southmont High School in 2008. She plans to attend Indiana State University.

She works for Summers Fencing, her family’s fencing business.

Her activities and honors include basketball, track and field, FFA and Business Professionals of America.

Summers enjoys hanging out with friends and family, playing basketball, running, fishing with her dad and brother, shopping with friends, taking pictures, boating, water skiing and working on the farm.

She is a member of the Jackson Township Victorettes 4-H club, led by Delana Bennington.

4-H projects and honors include dairy, nine years, two herdsman awards; beef, seven years; gardening, nine years; dairy goats, nine years, one herdsman award; swine, five years; meat goats, four years; starter calf, two years; poultry, one year; ceramics, three years; latch hook, two years; miscellaneous crafts, two years; and gift wrapping, one year.

Her parents Mike and Debbie Summers, and she has a brother, Max, 27, and sister, Ashlie, 23.



Christina Williams

Christina Williams, 18, of Lebanon, attends Lebanon High School, and will graduate in 2009. She plans to attend the University of Kentucky.

Her current employment is riding horses.

Her activities and honors are soccer, 2006 Mental Attitude Award, track, warming up horses for intercollegiate horsemanship competitions, attends Lebanon Christian Church and IHJA.

Williams’ hobbies and interests include soccer, riding and training horses, high school sports, college sports and friends.

She is a member of the Center Township Clovers 4-H club, led by Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Endicott and Debbie Bevington.

4-H projects include dog obedience, eight years; junior leadership, two years; photography, seven years, overall champion, one year; horse and pony, seven years, many championships; veterinary science, three years; and cats, one year.

Bridle Oaks Farm is sponsoring Williams.

Her parents are Brent and Donna Williams, and she has no siblings.
