The low bid for a new fire station in Advance is $100,000 more than a half-million-dollar grant the department received from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs in December.
The lowest of the three bids received was for $603,000, Advance FD Chief Jim Caldwell said Tuesday. The other bids were $616,000 and $621,000.
“We were hoping it would be between $500,000 and $550,000,” Caldwell said. “But it is what it is.”
“We’ve made arrangements for extra money” to cover the expense, Caldwell said. The total cost of the new station will “probably be about $700,000,” he said, but “we’ll do everything we can to make it go down.”
If all goes as planned, a contract for the station’s construction will be signed in late March, Caldwell said.
