County to pay Stayer case costs

Lebanon — by rod rose

The Lebanon Reporter

Lebanon — The county will pay a $8,235 bill from Whitestown Police for “extraordinary expenses” in the Michael Stayer murder investigation, but not until at least December, County Attorney Bob Clutter said Monday.

Clutter said Boone County Prosecutor Todd Meyer told him the bill, submitted to the Boone County Council on Nov. 11, was for tasks Meyer had asked the WPD perform.

Meyer had “specifically asked” that WPD perform what Clutter said he believed were witness interviews as part of trial preparation.

Stayer is accused of murdering his ex-wife, Beth Stayer, on June 12 at her Whitestown apartment. His trial is scheduled for Feb. 1 in Boone Circuit Court.

Monday, the commissioners verified the WPD invoice had been deleted from the list of bills they review and approve each month.

Council members balked when Tonya Thayer, the prosecutor’s office manager, submitted the invoice.
