Year in Review No. 1: Lebanon loses Mayor John Lasley

By Rod Rose/The Lebanon Reporter

Lebanon — Mayor John Lasley, who swept to office in a November 2007 landslide, died at an Indianapolis hospice on May 3, less than 16 months into his term.

The former banker, civic leader and longtime office holder was 61.

Hundreds of people attended his funeral, held at Lebanon High School’s Jim Rosenstihl Gymnasium.

Lasley was first elected to the Lebanon City Council in 1984, a position he held through his mayoral candidacy. He was active in many community and church programs.

The Lebanon Municipal Building’s council chambers were named in his memory in a Nov. 30 ceremony.

A life resident of Boone County, Lasley’s determined struggle against a relapse of cancer drew admiration and support from friends, family and the general public; a vigil at the Boone County Courthouse was attended by about 300 persons.

Huck Lewis was named Lasley’s successor at a May 24 caucus of the city’s Republican party precinct committee chairpersons. Lewis was sworn into office on May 26.
