Lebanon group visits Haiti

By Sarah Lang/The Lebanon Reporter

Lebanon — During Chuck Heinold’s recent trip to earthquake-devastated Haiti, he took a photo of a woman sitting outside of her damaged home. She is staring into space, expression vacant.

“And that sort of sums up what’s going on down there,” Heinold said. “It was very disheartening.”

Heinold and six others from Lebanon Christian Church returned last week from a 12-day trip to the Haitian village Cyvadier, just outside of the metropolitan area of Jacmel. There they rebuilt a resident’s crumbling home and handed out food — two-weeks worth to 120 families. The food fit into one 50-pound rice bag.

In Heinold’s world, he said it’s hard to fit two weeks worth of groceries in the back of his vehicle.

“This (trip) opened a lot of hearts, opened a lot of eyes to the needs of others,” he said.
