Rossville — The Western Boone Lady Stars put on a defensive clinic in the second half Tuesday night in Rossville.
The ninth-ranked team in Class 3A held the host Hornets to just eight points on 2-of-11 shooting on their way to a 64-31 victory.
“We played pretty good basketball for three of the four quarters,” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “We were up 25-10 after one and they only scored eight in the second half, so we held them to 18 points for three of the quarters. That second quarter was a debacle. We stopped playing really hard on defense. They got a lot more aggressive than us and we got timid and turned it over too much. I understand we won the game by 30 and that is good, but to win the things we want to win, we have to be locked in for 32 minutes.”
Western Boone jumped out to a 17-0 lead and extended the margin to 19 at 21-2.
Rossville scored five of the last seven points of the first quarter then out-scored Western Boone 13-9 in the second quarter to trail by just 11 at the half.
“They are a far superior team,” Rossville head coach Jeff Henley said. “They are athletic and quick and they have nice size. The first couple of minutes their press bothered us and after that we did a nice job attacking it. In the second half, we knew they were going to come back harder and (coach Schelsky) made some adjustments and we panicked. Then in the fourth quarter we got tired. But (Western Boone) is such a good team and they are deep.”
Schelsky said the Stars struggled in the second quarter because they were having troubles scoring.
