Tigers’ Campbell three-peats at regional

Stars' McCloskey tops Tatom in overtime again

Linden — Lebanon senior 145-pound wrestler Collin Campbell is still looking for his first berth in the state finals.

He will have a good chance at making it now, after winning his third-consecutive regional title Saturday with a 7-3 win against Westfield’s Michael Steele.

“I feel fantastic,” Campbell said. “Three-time regional champ is something to be proud of. This week in practice, I felt the best I have all year. I was actually four pounds under after each practice. I think it is where i should be. Then getting better win (scorewise) compared to the sectional, it boosts my confidence heading to the semi-state, which helps.”

Campbell also set the Lebanon single-season takedown record Saturday, which now stands at 110 for the season.

After defeating Steele in overtime the week before in the sectional, Campbell was more in control Saturday, registering three takedowns compared to none for Steele.

“Last week, I was sloppy and all over the place,” Campbell said. “I hit the leg but I couldn’t finish it. I wasn’t staying with my technique, I just tried to out-muscle him. I have that problem sometimes because I am stronger than most of the kids I face. You can’t do that against a solid kid. Today, I tried to stay under control and when I got the leg I didn’t rush it, I just secured the leg and finished.”
