Tigers stun Bulldogs with comeback, five-game win

Lebanon — Nothing was going the Lebanon Tigers way in game five of their volleyball match with Class 2A No. 12 Clinton Central Thursday night.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-1 lead and later in the game, senior leader Dominique Melvin went down with an injury. But the Tigers banded together for a thrilling 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 17-15 victory.

“I am going to say that was the win of my career,” Lebanon head coach Rob Zajdel said. “That was incredible. How these girls were able to step it up, in a situation like that when your leader goes down; Wow.”

Clinton Central scored the first five points in the game and led 7-1.

Zajdel said they had troubles with Clinton Central’s serve at the beginning of the game.

“She had a cork spin on the ball and we haven’t seen it all year,” Zajdel said. “We were having trouble receiving on that. We never quite adjusted to it all the way, but we were able to fight back and that was the most important thing.”

The Tigers continued to cut in the deficit and got within two at 11-9 on a kill by Hannah Stefanik. Melvin went back to serve and on the ensuing point injured her right ankle.

Emily Barber came in to serve for Melvin, and although the Tigers lost that point, they won the next two to get within one at 12-11.

The teams traded points and the Bulldogs had two match points at 14-12. Lebanon dug deep, getting a side out and a kill by Kristen Spolyar to tie the match.

Zajdel said that after Melvin got hurt he told the girls they had to dig deep.
