WeBo AD Irwin heading to LC

Dover — Western Boone will have a new athletic director for the 2012-13 school year.

Athletic Director Jeff Irwin announced Friday that he was leaving the Stars to become the athletic director at Lawrence Central.

“First, I want to say that Western Boone has been phenomenal — the administration, the coaches and the kids,” Irwin said. “Ultimately, it goes back to when I was in athletic administration at Purdue for six years. For me personally, it is a move that fit the vision I had. It is a big school, a top-10 school in the state and has a diverse student body. It was a good move given my background — a big school and

a different feel.”

Before coming to Western Boone, Irwin was the athletic director at Southmont High School.

Moving from two smaller schools to Lawrence Central is going to be a small adjustment, he said.

“My work ethic and the day-to-day operations — hiring officials, scheduling busses — that is not going to be any different,” Irwin said. “Obviously at a school at that level, and with the coaching staffs, the expectations are going to be even higher. The vision and plan that I share with the coaches and the community have to be even more connected. There is a lot in place in a positive way already. When I start, I will probably be more observant and listen to the coaches and community about what they think are the strengths and weaknesses. At my previous two schools, there were more changes that needed to be made.”

During Irwin’s tenure, Western Boone claimed four Sagamore Conference titles, had eight sectional finalists and four sectional champions and the girls golf team advanced out of sectionals three times.
