Dover —
The Western Boone Lady Stars basketball team kicked off its 2012-13 season Thursday night with a scrimmage against Mooresville.
The match-up against the Pioneers is all part of a big shift in scheduling by the Stars.
“When you look at our schedule and look at who we scrimmaged tonight, we have made a big emphasis on really upgrading our schedule,” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “We came out a little shell shocked tonight. One thing our kids have to realize really quickly is they are all varsity basketball players that are going to be counted on. It was a good learning experience for us.”
The past couple of years, Western Boone has scrimmaged against Delphi — a 2A school.
The Pioneers on the other hand have won four-straight sectional titles in Class 4A.
“It was a good way to grow up a little bit against a good 4A basketball team,” Schelsky said. “They have won four sectionals in a row and have exploited some weaknesses that we need to get better at. Sometimes, until you see it against another team, you don’t know really what you have to work on. That is the beauty of the scrimmage.”
The Stars struggled early in the scrimmage, but played much better in the final two stanzas.
