Dover — If there were any sectional jitters for the Western Boone Lady Stars in the sectional opener, they certainly didn’t show it.
The Stars never trailed and led by as many as 22 points on their way to a 58-40 victory.
“It was just a great effort,” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “I get a little too nitpicky sometimes. We only gave up 11 points in the first quarter, but I didn’t think that was good enough. We went 3-2 in the second quarter and held them to two points the entire quarter. That, to me, was the ballgame right there ‑ when we locked down defensively in the second quarter. Our zone got them standing, got them unaggressive and we took it from there and that was good to see.”
Western Boone scored the first seven points in the game and led 20-11 after Sarah Brewer hit back-to-back 3-pointers to end the first quarter.
The Stars continued to pour it on in the second quarter, outscoring North Montgomery 13-2 in the quarter to lead by 20 at the half.
Brewer was dominant in the first half, outscoring the Chargers 19-13 and hitting five 3-pointers.
“One of the big keys in the game was getting off to a good start offensively,” Schelsky said. “Sarah played like a senior who didn’t want to play her last game tonight. She played like the best player on the court, which she was, and really put it upon herself to play well early in the game. It was just a great performance.”
Western Boone maintained the lead early in the third quarter, going up 44-22 on a three-point play by BayLee Mitchell with 3:23 left in the quarter.
But the Chargers had one last run in them, going on a 9-1 run to get within 14 points at the end of the third quarter.
