Ferrell steps down as LHS girls coach

Lebanon — Hours before the sectional semifinal, Lebanon Tigers girls basketball coach Dave Ferrell voluntarily stepped down as coach for the rest of the season.

Lebanon Athletic Director Phil Levine sent an email, on behalf of the Lebanon Community School Corp., at 3:38 p.m. Friday stating:

“Mr. David Ferrell, the Lebanon High School Varsity Girls Basketball Coach, has informed the administration that he is voluntarily stepping down from his coaching position for the remainder of the season. Mr. Ferrell believes that this action is in the best interest of the program at this time. Until further notice all head coaching assignments and duties will be handled by Mrs. Penny Spolyar.”

Levine said there would be no further comment.

Several people have called The Lebanon Reporter with a rumor about the former coach, but school officials have not provided information about any incident and Lebanon Police PIO Lt. Brent Wheat Friday afternoon said he did not know of any police investigation regarding Ferrell.

He led the Tigers to a 47-20 record the last three season, including a 17-4 record and Class 3A No. 11 ranking this winter.

The Lebanon Lady Tigers have won back-to-back Sagamore Conference titles and were the 2011 Sectional 25 champions.

Ferrell played on three sectional winning teams at Lebanon before playing at DePauw University, were he was a member of a national runner-up team in 1990. As of 2009, he with the ninth on the all-time games played list at DePauw.

Prior coming to Lebanon, he was the head coach of the Zionsville boys’ team from 2002-06 compiling a record of 35-49.

Spolyar coached the Tigers Friday night in the sectional semifinal against Crawfordsville. Lebanon won, 74-50, and will face Western Boone tonight for the sectional championship.
