The Southmont girls basketball team turned the ball over and Western Boone ran away with the game.
The Mounties had 28 turnovers and never recovered to fall 61-35 to the Stars in Sagamore Conference play Friday.
“Turnovers killed us,” Southmont coach Chloe Allen said. “It was a big game at our house and the girls were nervous. They continued to make the same mistakes.”
Rachel Ramey scored 12 points and Lauren Marsh scored 11 for Western Boone (8-3), who ended a two game skid.
The Mounties committed four straight turnovers and Western Boone jumped to a 9-2 lead at the start of the game.
“That was the game plan tonight,” Western Boone coach Rich Schelsky said. “We haven’t been a defensive team like that a lot this year. Tonight we weren’t going to match-up and defend the basket very well with the height disadvantage we had. We had to go out and get them.”
Alexa McKinsey ended the slump with a lay-up and Wetli scored hit a jumper to get the Mounties back within three points at 9-6.
The Stars extended the lead to 11 early in the second quarter.
Western Boone’s BayLee Mitchell and Lydia Climer each hit jumpers and Taylor Vanderpool scored a free throw while the Mounties turned the ball over and missed a shot and the Stars led 21-11.
“We wanted to run, we wanted to get the tempo up,” Schelsky said. “The whole game plan was to attack the basket. To our kids credit, they didn’t hang their heads when they turned the ball over.”
The third quarter wasn’t much different.
Ramey got things rolling for the Stars. She was fouled on a shot and hit the extra free throw to make it 33-18.
Mitchell scored off a steal and Ramey scored three points in the next two possessions to give the Stars a 38-18 lead and the Stars maintained a solid lead the rest of the way.
Boys fall in final minute
NEW MARKET — Southmont had prepared all week for what they saw against Western Boone. And when they saw it, they were ready.
Cody Thomas hit the go ahead 3-pointer with just over a minute to play and the Mounties knocked off Western Boone 49-46 Friday night.
“There was a lot of calmness because we practiced almost that exact scenario this week,” Southmont coach Jon Sparks said. “We try to give kids scenarios throughout the week and that was almost and exact one.”
C.J. McMann scored 15 points and J.T. Whitaker had 11 for Western Boone (3-3), who have dropped three straight.
McMann hit a 3-pointer with 1:28 left to tie the game at 46 before the Mounties jumped ahead again in a game that was back and forth from the start.
Southmont had the lead for much of the game. They went on a 7-0 run at the end of the first quarter to take 16-9 lead.
But then Western Boone went on a run of their own to get back within a point, 16-15.
The Mounties led 23-19 at halftime, but then Western Boone took the lead in the third quarter when Austin Burtner hit a shot to make it 27-26. They took a 34-31 lead in the third, but couldn’t hold the Mounties.
“I just think right now we’re really soft,” Western Boone coach Scott McClelland said. “That’s the biggest thing that bothers me right now. We cannot play every possession full-go.”
