Brownsburg — Something had to give Wednesday night when the Class 3A No. 11 Lebanon Tigers traveled to battle the Class 4A No. 5 Brownsburg Bulldogs.
Neither team had lost in 2012 and had already clinched their conference titles. Unfortunately for the Tigers, it would be their seven-game winning streak that was snapped.
Brownsburg’s Allison DeVaney hit a runner with 5.6 seconds left to break a 61-61 tie and Lebanon couldn’t get a shot off in the final seconds, falling to 16-4 with a 63-61 defeat.
“I am proud of the effort our girls put in tonight,” Lebanon head coach Dave Ferrell said. “Against good teams obviously you need effort, but you also have to have execution. And I didn’t feel like at all times we needed to execute the way we needed to in order to win the game. You have to credit the girls, they didn’t give up. Down 15 at one point they could have called it in and they didn’t. They continued to claw, fight and battle and do exactly what I asked them to.”
After trailing by eight at halftime, Lebanon got down 15 at 45-30 halfway through the third quarter.
The Tigers battled back with an 8-1 run to get with eight at the end of the quarter, and back-to-back 3-pointers by Lexi Reese and Aspen Davis made the score 48-46 with 7:14 to play in the game.
Division I prospect Stephanie Mavunga scored six-straight points to bring the lead back to eight with 6:10 to play. The lead stood at nine with 3:56 to go, when Katie Curtis quickly scored six-straight points to cut the lead to 56-53 with 2:38 to go.
It appeared like Lebanon would get no closer, especially when DeVaney split two free throws with 45.5 seconds left to put Brownsburg up five. But Reese hit a 3-pointer and Kallee Rice stole the ball from a Brownsburg player on the next possession and was able to pass it ahead to Curtis for the game-tying lay-in with 19.2 seconds left.
