Stars in position for fourth-straight title

Linden — It was a streak coach Ken Hampton wanted to see come to an end.

His North Montgomery girls basketball squad had dropped games in three-straight Sugar Creek Classics to Western Boone.

However, an increased defensive presence in the second half fueled the Stars past the host Chargers 51-43.

WeBo (3-1) will play Crawfordsville (3-1) in tonight’s championship match. North (1-1) takes on Southmont (1-2) in the consolation game.

“We came out ready to play and matched their intensity,” Hampton said. “We gave it our best effort. It just came down to situational basketball and we’ve got to score at critical times.”

The physical play and close game was a teaching point for WeBo coach Rich Schelsky.

“We’ve got to go through battles like that,” Schelsky said. “We’ve got to learn to win games like that instead of beating teams by 40 or 50 points. We’re going to get a lot better from this game.”

North started fast and built a six-point advantage late in the first quarter and again early in the second.

Macy Gillogly tried to help off-set an off shooting night by senior leader Kelsi Byrd, who hit just two of her 13 shots. Gillogly’s team-high 12 points and tough first half defense against Stars 6-foot-2 Emily Harrison kept North in the game.

“First half we had girls hitting shots on the wing,” Hampton said. “They went to man which I thought would help us, but we didn’t’ get much out of our man offense.”
