Western Boone looking to reload in 2012-13

Dover —

The Western Boone Stars boys basketball team will have a completely new look this season.

The Stars not only have a new coach in Scott McClelland, but also have to replace four starters from last year’s squad.

“I think more than anything we are trying to find some energy,” McClelland said of the first couple of weeks of practice. “The kids have made a conscious effort to grasp what we are throwing at them and trying to learn about what we are trying to get accomplished.

“The biggest thing right now is we are working to get them to compete at the highest level we can and ultimately we have done a pretty good job.

“We have thrown a lot at them and they recognize that and are working to get better every day.”

McClelland saw his team compete against another opponent for the first time last Wednesday, when the Stars scrimmaged against McCutcheon.

He said that he was “very pleased” with the ways the Stars played in the first quarter of the scrimmage and saw some things they could work on in the second and third quarters against the press and zone.

C.J. McMann is the lone returning starter for the Stars.

He averaged 9.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists last year.

McClelland said leadership starts with McMann and then trickles down to a few others.

“First and foremost you look at C.J. McMann who is a returning starter from last year,” McClelland said. “He is one of the two guys who played a lot of varsity last year. So we will look at him and then a couple guys who have haven’t played as much varsity or been in big situations — L.V. Bowden (2.7 ppg) and Riggs Baxter (1.5 ppg). We feel like we have a chance (to do some things) with J.T. Whitaker. He didn’t play football this year and missed all of last year, due to a knee injury. He made the most of his fall and I have been really impressed with him. He provides some nice size.”
