Dover — The Western Boone volleyball team came into Tuesday’s regional championship match against Indianapolis Bishop Chatard flying high, seeking the school’s first regional championship since 1999.
But those dreams came crashing down Tuesday, as the Trojans avenged a regular-season loss with a 25-16, 25-21, 25-15 victory. The Stars finished the season 30-4.
“I think that we are a young team and our inexperience in games like this showed,” Western Boone head coach Laura Lawson said. “From the beginning we made some silly mistakes. We can play with them but those silly mistakes definitely hurt us. The first game we had six unforced errors – either double hits or getting into the net – and you can’t do that against Chatard. They will capitalize on that.”
The Stars won a tight 2-1 match late in September against the Trojans, but were unable to match that effort, thanks to strong Chatard defense and the setting of the Trojan’s Ellen Schroeder.
“They were a good team then and we were kind of surprised when we beat them the first time,” Lawson said. “What really killed us today was their setter did a good job of making sure we couldn’t set-up a good block. We haven’t seen a setter like that. (Our setter) Lydia (Climer) had been the best setter I have seen this year and that girl was right there. We couldn’t put a block up because we didn’t know where she was going.”
