Dover —
Western Boone junior Austin Burtner didn’t play for the first 15:55 of the second half Thursday night against Class 2A No. 15 Speedway.
But when he got into the game he made it count. Burtner swished a 3-pointer from the right corner as time expired to give Western Boone a 60-59 victory.
“I think it is a true testament to what our kids are doing right now,” Western Boone head coach Scott McClelland said. “They are making things really enjoyable. We are getting better every day. To see this group of young men continue to grow is really exciting. It is just a great win all the way around, however you want to look at it. It is a confidence builder, a momentum builder, and a great example that everyone has to be ready.”
Western Boone trailed 56-55 when C.J. McMann made a driving lay-up with 15 seconds left to give the Stars the lead.
But the Sparkplugs came down the court and Austin Angela hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to give Speedway the 59-57 lead with 4.8 seconds left.
After the Stars called timeout, McMann took the in-bounds and started up the right side of the court. He got in the air and looked like he was going to attempt the winning shot.
But while in midair he passed to Burtner in the corner, who calmly nailed the winning shot.
