Tigers hold off late Westfield rally to finally beat Shamrocks

Lebanon — The past two seasons, the Westfield Shamrocks have topped the Lebanon Tigers boys basketball team on a last-second shot.

This year, the Class 3A No. 3 Tigers made sure it didn’t happen a third time. Strong defense by Jack Day forced Westfield’s Tyler Osswald to lose control of the ball before putting up a shot, and the Tigers topped Westfield for the first time since 2004, 44-41.

“The last two years we have been beaten on a last-second shot by these guys,” Lebanon head coach Albert Hendrix said. “And two years ago they ran a play where they flashed their big man to the 10 second line, handed it off to their shooter, and he drove and got the basket to beat us. We were prepared for that, and Jack did a great job, and our entire team did a great job of not letting them get a good look at the basket.”

One day after the Tigers gave up 54 points in the second half to Southmont, their defense allowed Westfield to shoot just 27.8 percent in the second half and 41.7 percent for the game.

They also forced 20 turnovers in allowing their second fewest point total of the year.

“I am really proud because last night we had a huge lead at halftime, and in the second half our defense fell apart, and we kind of waltzed through,” Hendrix said.

The score was tied at 21 in the first half, with no team leading by more than four points for the first 16 minutes.

It was much the same in the second half, with Westfield leading 30-27 with 2:14 left in the third quarter. Lebanon scored the final five points of the quarter and the first five points of the fourth quarter to take the biggest lead of the game at 37-30, with 6:23 to play in the game.
