McCloskey wins Sagamore Conference title

Tigers fourth, Stars sixth at meet

Linden — Western Boone junior 160-pound wrestler Austin McCloskey easily won the Sagamore Conference title Saturday afternoon at North Montgomery.

But while happy with the win, the conference title was the last thing on his mind.

“I am ready for state now,” McCloskey said shortly after he pinned Southmont’s Zach Worm in 47 seconds in the championship match. “That is what I am going to look forward to.”

McCloskey has wrestled up one weight class this year on occasion, but will wrestle at 160 the rest of the year.

He said wrestling up a weight class helps him at this point in the season.

“It helps me not get worn out first of all because if I was cutting weight to 60 all year it would wear me out,” McCloskey said. “Now I feel stronger.”

McCloskey placed third at 152 pounds last season and has been ranked No. 1 all season at 160.

He said he likes having the target on his back.

“It puts a little pressure on me and makes me better pushing me in practice,” McCloskey said. “I will be working on snap downs and being more offensive in my matches.”

McCloskey was the only Boone County champion Saturday, although they had five other finalists.

Lebanon had second-place finishes from Caleb Bocock (106), Jarrin Milakovic (132), Austin Smith (138) and Collin Campbell (145).

The Tigers finished with 162 points, good for fourth place.
