Dover —
The Western Boone girls soccer team lost its leading scorer from the 2011 season, but that hasn’t dampened the high hopes the Stars have for the upcoming season.
The Stars return the next seven top scorers and eight starters overall, leading to high expectations in western Boone County.
“We are expecting to finish in the top half of the Sagamore Conference,” Western Boone head coach Jen Fisher said. “We want to be competitive in every game we play. We are excited to have the eight starters back and we have some good freshmen coming up, so we think we can have a good season.”
The Stars captains will be Wilda Knecht and Katelynn James this season. Knecht is the leading returning goal scorer after putting in three goals last season.
James led the team in assists with six and added two goals.
“They are both midfielders and good vocal leaders,” Fisher said. “We have good leadership across the board.”
Fisher said she also said she will look to seniors Abby Tharp, and Cassandra Corson, as well as junior Allie Aguirre (1.18 GAA and five shutouts) for leadership.
A luxury for Western Boone is that the girls all play in different parts of the field.
“They have all been great at setting the tone,” Fisher said.
Those leaders, plus the depth of the roster, has Fisher excited for the regular season.
