Stars repeat as sectional champs

Dover — The goal for the Western Boone volleyball team has been clear since the day practice began in early August – win sectionals and get a chance at redemption in the regionals.

After two and a half months, the goal has been achieved. The Stars topped Frankfort 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-17).

“It feels great,” Western Boone head coach Laura Lawson said. “I don’t think there is any WeBo team that has won back-to-back sectionals. It didn’t feel real at first because we have been pushing toward regionals and that was in the back of our mind. Last year, we wanted sectionals so much, so right now, it doesn’t seem like we won.”

Sept. 13, Western Boone dominated in three games against the Hot Dogs.

Saturday night’s match was anything but a domination. It was just the little things that made the difference in each game.

“Our team has come so far this season,” an emotional Kia Rushton said after the match. “I am really proud of the way they came out tonight. We knew it was going to take our very, very best match to beat them, and WeBo came out to play.”

Western Boone came out on fire, jumping to an 11-4 lead in game one.

The Stars were able to keep the Hot Dogs off balance with four different Stars getting kills.

“I think it was as fired up as they have been,” Lawson said. “We didn’t think Frankfort was as energetic in their warm-up as they were in the morning. I wanted the girls to be really loud when we were warming up and let them watch our hits and see how good we are.”

Frankfort called a timeout and was able to slow things down.

The Hot Dogs got within three points on two occasions, but could never get any closer.
