New face to lead experienced Stars

Dover — For the third time in three years, Western Boone will have a new head coach of the baseball team.

Dave Sloan – who served as an assistant coach last season – takes over the reigns from Dustin Cunningham.

So far the transition has been smooth, as Western Boone returns every player from last year’s squad.

“Last year was my first year as an assistant in a while,” Sloan said. “And really it is the same kids and same program. It really hasn’t been a big issue at all, we are doing the same thing.”

The first couple of days of practice haven’t been ideal for the Stars, as the weather has prevented them from getting outside for long periods of time.

Sloan said they are doing the best they can with the circumstances as they get ready for the March 25 opener against Class 4A No. 1 Zionsville.

“We have been inside, (Tuesday) was the first day we could get out and we are only going like 20-30 minutes to get accumulated to the weather,” Sloan said. “The field is still really soft, so we are limited in what we can do. But we are going to add to it every day and next week we will be out no matter what. We have to get ready for the No. 1 team in 4A.”

With all the experience coming back for Western Boone, Sloan is excited for the possibilities of the team in 2013.
