Horse Pull

— After about two decades, a horse pull came back to the Boone County 4-H Fair Thursday night at the North Track. Seven different teams from around the Midwest competed in the event. Each team consists of two horses that try to pull a weighted sled for 27 feet, 6 inches. The winning pull came from Hopson, Smith and Miles with their horses Frank and Jack (shown above). The horses, which weighed a combined 4,400 pounds, were able to pull an 8,000-pound sled 15 feed, 8-inches, to defeated the horses of Thompson and Strain — Abe and R.J. — by six inches. Those were the only two teams to make it to the 8,000-pound sled. The Russelberg and Duval team finished in third with their horses Rocky and Pete with a pull of 19 feet, 10-inches at 7,500 pounds. Bill and Joe Edwards also made it to the 7,500 pound sled with their horses Rock and Sam, but pulled just 13 feet, 2-inches to place fourth.
