Short-handed Stars fall to No. 5 Huskies

Dover — Tuesday night’s highly anticipated match-up between the Class 3A No. 13 Western Boone Lady Stars and Class 3A No. 5 Hamilton Heights Huskies took a hit before the game even started, when Western Boone’s three leading scorers and rebounders (Nicole Chance, Emily Harrison and BayLee Mitchell) missed the game due to injury or illness.

Without the 31.3 points and 18 rebounds a game the Stars were over-matched by the Huskies and lost 68-45.

“We knew it was going to be an uphill climb when you are out three starters who are your three leading scorers,” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “That is a lot to throw on a team that went from that to starting three kids who have never started a varsity game. Overall, I was proud of our kids. We did some things in the first half that I wasn’t overly pleased with, because I thought we let the tempo of the game get away from us. It is no secret that we aren’t a high-powered offense and we can’t get into high-paced games and track meets. But, in the second half, we calmed down, competed on defense, slowed the game down and that is why we won the second half. There is lot to be said from that and hopefully our kids understand that. There is more than one way to skin a cat and this team the way it is built and constructed is different than what we had in year’s past.”

The score was tied at 11 midway through the first quarter, but the Huskies scored the final 11 points of the quarter to take a 22-11 lead after one.

The run extended to 29-3 through the second quarter — the lone basket being a Rachel Ramey 3-pointer — and the Stars trailed 42-17.

The lead got to 51-19 in the third before Western Boone scored seven of the final 10 points in the quarter.
