John Roach Wiley

— Mr. John Roach Wiley, 92, of Lebanon, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010, at his home in Lebanon.

John was born Nov. 12, 1917, in Boone County. He was the son of William and Margaret Veronica (Roach) Wiley. He was reared and educated in Boone County, where he graduated from Perry Central High School in 1935.

He married Beatrice Ione “Bird” Maloney on Aug. 23, 1947, at St. Malachy Catholic Church, Brownsburg. Mrs. Wiley passed away June 20, 2009.

John served in World War II, in the Texas National Guard and later with the Army Air Corps. He completed 31 missions as a co-pilot. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross Award and the Air Medal with two bronze clusters.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lebanon. He belonged to the American Legion, 40 & 8, and the 487th Bomb Group. He was a fourth generation farmer in Boone County.

John enjoyed Purdue basketball and Notre Dame football, genealogy and attending his annual 487th Bomb Group reunions.

Survivors include six children, Margaret Ann (Daniel) Wunderlich of Terre Haute, Rose (J. William) Myers of Austin, Texas, Bonnie (David) Kincaid, Frances Wiley, Robert G. (Tricia) Wiley and Jerry Wiley, all of Lebanon; one sister, Margaret Johanna Hanlon of Anderson; three sisters-in-law, Mary Wiley of Lebanon and Patricia Edwards of Zionsville and Eileen Price of Indianapolis; brother-In-Law, John V. Maloney of Avon; ten grandchildren, Erikah Fox of Louisville, Ky., Brent Wunderlich of Conroe, Texas, Aaron Wunderlich of Bakersfield, Calif., Adriane Wunderlich of Terre Haute, Andrew Myers of Schaumburg, Ill., Holly Myers of Austin, Leslie Myers of Brooklyn, N.Y., Staci Kincaid Sorgatz of Madison Heights, Mich., and Sydney Wiley and Bridget Wiley, both of Lebanon; four great-grandchildren, Eryn Fox and John R. Fox, both of Louisville, and Taylor Sorgatz and Morgan Sorgatz, both of Madison Heights.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel D. Kincaid; four brothers, William, Thomas, Robert and Samuel Wiley; and two sisters, Mary Ann Wiley and Sister Marguerite (Martha) Wiley.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Myers Chapel of Memories, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. The rosary will be recited prior to the visitation at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 6, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 319 E. South St., Lebanon, with the Rev. Timothy Kroeger officiating. Interment will follow with military rites at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Lebanon.
