Cenia Ruth Griggs

Lebanon

1915-2012

Mrs. Cenia Ruth Griggs, 97, of Lebanon, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at Kindred Transitional and Rehabilitation at Parkwood in Lebanon.

She was born on Aug. 30, 1915, in Putnam County to Otto F. and Lillie (Barker) Bymaster. They both preceded her in death.

Ruth graduated from Danville High School and, following graduation, took a course in nurse’s training for obstetrics and newborn care. She worked in a private home caring for children until her marriage. She married James L. Griggs on Aug. 22, 1936; he passed away July 11, 1975.

During the 1950s and 1960s, she did clerical work for Linde Aire Company in Speedway.

Ruth was musically gifted and played the piano for several years at the Whitestown Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member. Later as a widow, she was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Fayette. Ruth enjoyed her flowers and tending to them in her yard. She grew African Violets inside her home and gave “starts” to friends. She took great pride in her home and firmly believed in the adage, “cleanliness is next to godliness.” She was a good cook and especially enjoyed having family celebrations at birthdays and holidays.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Richard) Witt, and three grandchildren, Steven (Penny) Witt, Susan (Kerry) Evoy, and Scott (Lynn) Witt. Also surviving are one sister, Betty Funkhouser, and one sister-in-law, Martha Bymaster. She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She had very close neighbors, Pat and Dick Daupert, and a special “friendly visitor” Rebecca Merritt.

Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Clyde Bymaster, Earl Bymaster, and Forest Bymaster.

Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., in Lebanon.

Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Brother Steven Witt officiating.

Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
