Shirley Ann Schenkel

Shirley Ann Schenkel, 83, of Lebanon, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at her residence.

Shirley was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Connersville. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Ruth V. (McCleaster) Schenkel.

She was reared and educated in Liberty, where she graduated from Short High School in 1947. She then attended Indiana State University and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the field of education.

Shirley’s teaching career included two years in Richmond, three years in Liberty and one year in Arizona. In 1957, she returned to Indiana and started teaching in the Lebanon Community School Corporation where she worked at Hattie B. Stokes Elementary School and the Lebanon Middle School. At the end of the 1989 school year, Shirley retired after 31 years of teaching in the Lebanon community.

In her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at ARC of Boone County; was volunteer coordinator for Meals on Wheels; and helped at Boone County Senior Services, where she had the honor of being chosen “Volunteer of the Year.”

Shirley was a member of LCTA / ISTA / NEA, Sigma Delta Pi, Boone County Retired Teachers Association and the Red Hat Society.

Survivors include cousin, Mary Anna Roemke of Ft. Wayne; extended family: Keith A. (Marty) Campbell of Lebanon; their children, Keri (Chuck) Taulman and Craig (Heather) Campbell; and their grandchildren, Kelci Campbell, Lexa Campbell and Jacobi Campbell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Cheryl Schenkel.

Visitation is 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Myers Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. Terri Thorne officiating.  Entombment will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Shrine of Memories Mausoleum in Connersville.
