Walter B Pickering


— Walter B Pickering, 92, of Lebanon, died after a short battle with cancer.

He was born in Jefferson Township, Boone County, on Nov. 20, 1917, son of the late Bruce and Hallie (Higgs) Pickering. He graduated from Dover High School in 1935.

Walter married Jane Ann Shera on Aug. 25, 1940, and they later had two children, James Bruce and Judith Ann.

He retired in 1983 from grain and livestock farming.

Walter’s community activities included serving two terms on the Jackson Township Advisory Board and one term as Jackson Township Trustee. He served nine years as supervisor for the Boone County Soil and Water Conservation District and 31 years as treasurer of the former Advance United Methodist Church.

He was currently a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Lebanon.

Walter and Jane Ann enjoyed spending 14 years as winter residents of Bonita Springs, Fla.

His survivors include his wife of 70 years, Jane Ann; son, James Pickering of Indianapolis; daughter, Judith Ann (Scott) Skjordahl of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; and sister, Helen Young of Anderson. He leaves five granddaughters and their families, Michelle (Rick) Forsythe and Reagan and Rex Forsythe of Byhalia, Miss., Kara (Phil) Cromer and Luke, Jake and Gracie of Indianapolis, Jennifer (Tom) Stanton and Katie and Sarah of Jacksonville, Fla., and Amy and Ashley Skjordahl of Washington, D.C.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Pickering, and daughter-in-law, Barbara Pickering.

Family and friends will gather from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, at the mortuary, with the Rev. Dr. Sam Young officiating. Walter will be laid to rest in the Old Union Cemetery in rural Boone County.
