1931-2012

William “Earl” Smith, 81, of Lebanon, died Friday, October 12 at his residence surrounded by his family. Earl was born May 9, 1931 in Boone County, the son of Eula Fay (Smith) Shirley. Earl was reared and educated near Lebanon and graduated from the Kirklin High School. Earl enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan, the longest boat ride he ever experienced. Earl married Helen Lucille Dillon on February 21, 1952 a loving union that lasted over sixty years. Earl was an electrician by trade having worked in the community for 44 years. Earl enjoyed getting together with family and friends and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife; children Patricia Ann (Scott) Adams of Lebanon, Diana Lynn (Stephen) Cooper of Lebanon and Mary Ellen (Tony) Linton of Lebanon; grandchildren Chris Birge, Jeremy Birge, Travis Birge, Adam Linton, Katrina Adams, Andrea Dalton and Ben Dalton; great-grandchildren Noah Birge, Kaiden Birge and Caleb Dalton; siblings Joy Reeves of Lebanon and Harold Shirley of Lebanon. He was preceded in death by his mother; in-laws Charles and Lillian (Warren) Dillon, Earl passed away on the same day as his father-in-law.

Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, October 17 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon. The Rev. Scott Mauch will officiate his funeral service will be on Thursday, October 18 at 11:00 a.m. in the mortuary. Mr. Smith will be laid to rest following military rites in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
