Lebanon — Mrs. Virginia Lee Milam, 92, of Lebanon, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon.
Mrs. Milam was born Nov. 16, 1917, in Advance. She was the daughter of the late James Weaver Baird and Clara E. (Whitecotton) Emmert.
She moved with her family at age three to Montezuma, where she attended school. She was a graduate of Montezuma High School. While in high school, she played on the girls basketball team that won the Wabash Valley Championship. She received her degree in education from Indiana State Teachers College at Terre Haute. She also did graduate work in education at Butler University.
Mrs. Milam’s career in teaching began in Mecca in 1939, and continued in Montezuma. There she met her husband, Webb Lester “Les” Milam, also a teacher and coach at Montezuma. They were married in Albuquerque, N.M., on June 6, 1942, while Mr. Milam was serving in the United States Navy. Mr. Milam died on May 31, 1999.
Following World War II the couple resided in Newport, before moving to Lebanon in 1954. Mrs. Milam resumed her teaching career in 1968 at Dover, where she taught fourth grade. She then taught at Wells Elementary School for several years prior to her retirement in 1982.
Mrs. Milam was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lebanon. She joined Tri Kappa in Rockville in 1942 and was also active in the Lebanon Chapter. She also was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #302 in Perrysville, where she was a Past Worthy Matron.
Survivors include three children, David L. (Deborah) Milam of Lebanon, Pamela M. (Dr. David) Muffelman of Mobjack, Va., and Richard K. (Karen) Milam of Lebanon; two sisters, Imogene Wood of Mooresville and Marilyn Scott of Avon; eight grandchildren, David Milam Jr. of Guam, Jason Milam of Indianapolis, Emily (Andy) Wolfgang of Lebanon, Sarah Muffelman of Mobile, Ala., Matthew Muffelman of Boston, Mass., and Greg Milam, Scott Milam and Claire Milam, all of Lebanon; two great-grandchildren, Evan Wolfgang and Anneliese Wolfgang, both of Lebanon; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen “Kate” Collings Bosworth.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at Myers Chapel of Memories, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
