M. Clair Young
M. Clair Young, 86, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle passed away at Witham Hospital in Lebanon, on Thursday, March 4, 2010, surrounded by his family. He died peacefully and is now with his Maker.
Clair was born on June 13, 1923, in the family home on East South Street in Lebanon. For most of his youth, the family resided in Lebanon, and he graduated from Lebanon High School with the Class of 1941. He attended Purdue University, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He left Purdue to join the Army Air Corps. The great disappointment of his life was that he was honorably discharged for health reasons in July of 1943.
He married a Lebanon girl, Charlotte Lou Hanna, on June 17, 1944. She preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 2002. Lebanon is where they lived for some forty years and raised their three children, Laurinda, Jeff and Stephanie. They made many lifelong friends in Lebanon, with whom they kept in touch and visited after they retired to Homosassa, Fla., in 1986. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Lebanon with family and friends in June 1994.
While at Purdue, Clair studied Industrial Engineering. He worked mainly as a time and motion expert in the meat packing industry, traveling all over the United States and Canada, while Charlotte “kept the home fires burning.” Weekend time was family time, busy with church, badminton and backyard barbecues. Besides spending time with his family, Clair enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage and following Purdue football and other college sports. He was active in the Jaycees and a member of the American Legion. He and Charlotte were dedicated members of the First Presbyterian Church in Lebanon, and later joined Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church in Lecanto, Fla.
Clair leaves behind his children, Laurinda Hundley of Fishers, Jeff Young of North Port, Fla., and Stephanie (Mike) Walters of Lafayette; and five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and their children.
He will be dearly missed for his kindness, gentle manner, keen sense of humor and sweet singing voice.
Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Pastor John M. Nolan officiating. Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a memorial contribution be made to the American Heart Association, 6100 W. 96th St., Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46278-6005.
