Helen M. Newkirk


— Mrs. Helen M. (Walker) Newkirk, 83, of Carmel, formerly of Lebanon, died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at Parkwood Health Care Center, Lebanon.

Mrs. Newkirk was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Lebanon, to Herschel and Eloise (Rodgers) Walker.

She married Lloyd M. Newkirk on Jan. 15, 1942, in Owensburg, Ky. He survives.

Mrs. Newkirk helped run the family-owned farm, and acted as a secretary for her husband’s real estate and insurance businesses. While Lloyd was in the military, she worked at Scotts 5 & 10 on the square in Lebanon.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and was the best homemaker anyone could ever have. She also took care of foster children for a few years.

Mrs. Newkirk was an avid reader who enjoyed flowers, sewing and playing the organ. She also loved to travel and spend winters in Florida.

She was a member of the Church of Christ at Gadsden.

Survivors include children, Marion E. (Sheryl) Newkirk of Harrisonburg, Va., and Janet M. (Donald) Armbruster and Herschel A. (Teresa) Newkirk, all of Crawfordsville; sisters, Barbara Walker of Sheridan and Reva Ward of Brownsburg; brothers, Jerry (Mary Rose) Walker of Frankfort and Tom (Dorothy) Walker of Kokomo; and 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 20, at Russell & Hitch Funeral Home, 223 N. Meridian St., Lebanon. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the funeral home, with Mike Simms officiating. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lebanon.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
