Jane Reid Burns

Mrs. Jane Reid Burns, 79, of Lebanon, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at her residence.

Mrs. Burns was born July 29, 1931, in Indianapolis, the daughter of the late Kenneth Eugene and Gertrude Ann (Frisz) Reid. She was reared and educated in Indianapolis and was a 1949 graduate of St. Mary’s Academy.

During high school, she worked at Stokley Van Camp. She also studied nursing at St. Vincent Hospital. For several years prior to and following her marriage, she was employed at Associated Distributors. Mrs. Burns was a volunteer at the St. Vincent Stress Center in Indianapolis for several years and then worked as an employee there for five years. She retired in 1988.

She married William Lee Burns Sr. on March 31, 1951, in Indianapolis. Mr. Burns died on Dec. 27, 2006. She and Mr. Burns nurtured and loved ten children, and she stayed at home until after they were all in school. 

The family moved from Indianapolis to Lebanon in 1966. She and Mr. Burns enjoyed a home near Brazil at Rocky Fork Lake part time. They also spent a number of winters in Lake Wales, Fla.

Mrs. Burns was a woman mainly devoted to her family. As a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she enjoyed her children and grandchildren and followed their activities. She liked gardening, reading and sewing, and spent a lot of time fishing with her husband. 

She was a dedicated member, volunteer and lay minister at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lebanon, where she was passionate in her faith.

Survivors include ten children, Jo (Stephen) Rose, Mary Jane (Arthur) Paul, William L. Burns Jr. and wife, Cindy, and John Leighton (Beverly) Burns, all of Lebanon, Kenneth R. (Tina) Burns of Thorntown, Theresa A. (Craig) Boyer, Kathryn L. (Mark) Williams, Thomas E. (Blythe) Burns, Susan M. (Scott) Lollar and James A. Burns, all of Lebanon; one sister, Mary Alice (Frank) Skinner of Indianapolis; one sister-in-law, Patricia Burns of Lebanon; and 34 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen V. Galardo, Dorothy J. Martin and Barbara A. Hess.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. The Rosary will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 319 E. South St., Lebanon, with the Rev. Timothy Kroeger officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lebanon.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 319 E. South St., Lebanon, IN 46052.
